Alternative Spring Break is entering its 16th year at the University of Virginia. In 1992, a group of students decided to combine their desire to do community service work and their desire to travel somewhere new for spring break, and created Alternative Spring Break. Now a national organization, thousands of students from universities across the nation participate in their own Alternative Spring Break programs.
Alternative Spring Break at the University of Virginia is one of the largest ASB programs in the country. In 2008, over 800 students traveled to 56 destinations across the United States, Central and South America, and Africa to face issues including homelessness, poverty, children's welfare, Native American issues, women's issues, and urban violence. This year, we will be returning to over half of the same communities as last year, and will be sponsoring 27 domestic and 19 international spring trips, 6 winter and 4 summer projects.
